Letterheads

Green-Wood has millions of documents in its archives—a wide variety of records produced during the day-to-day business of the Cemetery and recording the over 570,000 internments across the grounds. Since 2010, volunteers have been working to archivally preserve the most robust record group: Green-Wood’s burial orders. In the process, they’ve come across hundreds of beautiful and fascinating nineteenth-century letterheads—those of businesses owned by lot owners communicating instructions or requests to the Cemetery, or of businesses engaged with the Cemetery, such as monument makers, florists, and funeral directors. Here are just a few of the most interesting.
